Chapter 11

Marcus

With Gina ignoring me, I couldn’t take it, so I got up and moved to the back of the bus with Buddy Long, who was already three sheets to the wind.

“Have a beer,” he said, pushing an unopened bottle into my hands.

I ignored him and held the beer, still thinking about how messed up things were with me and Gina. It hadn’t been how I’d expected it to be after we’d made mad, hot love together. Maybe it had been a mistake, but I thought we’d at least be adults about it and get along.

“Are you going to open that or save it as a souvenir or something?” Buddy snatched the bottle from my hand and popped the cap before handing it back.

I grabbed it and took a long drink, but I just wasn’t feeling it. It had been a while since we’d chartered such a large bus, usually flying out as a team, but now, with the next few games scheduled just right, Coach Smith thought it would be best to use our team bus again to make the owner happy.

“What’s wrong with you, Reid? Did the new coach hurt your feelings?” He nudged Hernandez, who sat next to him nursing his own beer, and the two of them laughed at me.

“I don’t want to talk about it,” I said, hoping they’d get the hint and leave me the hell alone. I sipped the beer, and a minute later, Buddy looked up and whistled.

Since the cheerleaders’ bus had been too crowded, Coach Smith had allowed a few of the ladies to crash on our bus for a few miles since our last pit stop, and they had stayed to themselves. But then, Mackenzie made her way down the aisle and plopped down in my lap, throwing her arms around me and nearly causing me to spill my beer.

“Hey, sexy,” she whispered in my ear as her hair tickled my neck. “I thought I’d come and say hello.”

“Hi,” I responded with little enthusiasm.

She gave me a sideward look and then licked her lips before she leaned in and spoke in my ear again. “I was thinking you and I could get together at the hotel. If you’re up for it. We could do a little pregame celebrating unless you’d rather wait until after?” She glanced up at me, her blue eyes hopeful.

I wanted Gina more than I wanted any other woman, including Mackenzie, so her offer wasn’t the least bit tempting.

“I’m so glad we’re on this trip together,” she said.

“There are at least a hundred others, so—”

She burst out laughing, her giggle so close to my ear, it began to ring. “You’re so funny. I just love it when you tease.”

“I’m not teasing, and I’m not interested in hooking up on this trip.” She gave me a look like I was out of my mind. “I’m sorry, I’ve got a lot on my mind and important shit to take care of when I get to the hotel.”

She lifted her shoulder to shrug it off and then hopped out of my lap.
